How can you prevent rumen acidosis? One solution is frequent feed pushing

Rumen acidosis is a common problem in dairy cows and can have significant health implications. It is therefore vital to keep the pH level as stable as possible. How does rumen acidosis occur? And what impact does frequent feed pushing have on its prevention? 

How does rumen acidosis occur? 

Rumen acidosis in cows occurs when the pH level in the rumen becomes unbalanced and drops too low. It is generally accepted that the condition occurs when the pH level falls below 5.8. However, some researchers use a lower pH in defining rumen acidosis. 

The potential risk of rumen acidosis is always looming and can have several causes. These include: 

  • Improper nutrition: one of the main causes of rumen acidosis is a diet too rich in starches and sugars. When cows ingest an excessive amount of easily digestible carbohydrates, it can trigger rapid fermentation in the rumen, resulting in a reduced pH level. 
  • Insufficient fibre: fibre-rich foods, such as roughage, are essential for healthy rumen function and a lack of fibre can negatively affect the rumen’s pH level. 
  • Feed intake: cows that eat too little or too quickly are at greater risk of developing rumen acidosis. Irregular feed intake can disrupt the rumen’s pH level. 
  • Stressful situations: stress caused by factors such as dietary changes or heat stress can disrupt the rumen’s pH level. 

Consequences of rumen acidosis 

Rumen acidosis can have a significant financial impact. Research shows that cows with rumen acidosis yield an average of 2.7 kilograms less milk per day. Their milk also contains less fat (-0.3%) and protein (-0.12%).  

Moreover, acidosis has long-term consequences because cows with the condition are more susceptible to problems like laminitis, sole ulcers and reduced fertility. As a livestock farmer, you will naturally want to do everything you can to prevent this. 

Regular feed pushing 

To prevent rumen acidosis, it is important that you provide your cows with a diet that has sufficient structure, consisting of a balanced ration and high-quality roughage. 

Make sure your cows always have access to fresh feed at the feed fence. Increasing the frequency of feeding and feed pushing will encourage cows to come to the feed fence more often and eat less hurriedly. Pushing manageable amounts of feed at set times prevents excessive feed intake and reduces selectivity (deferral to higher-ranked cows).  

A more consistent feed intake can prevent fluctuations in pH levels. Water stimulates saliva production, which regulates the pH level of the rumen. Water intake influences rumen function, feed intake and milk production.
